No spreadsheets, no seventeen open browser tabs comparing flights — just the quiet certainty that everything was already handled. For another client, luxury meant a private jet and a suite with a view. Both were right.
We hear the word “luxury” tossed around constantly in travel. Ask ten people to define it, and you’ll likely get ten different answers. Google it, and you’ll find something along the lines of personalized travel with exceptional service and comfort — which sounds tidy, until you realize “comfort” itself means something different to everyone. So, who’s right?
Everyone.
What one person defines as luxury, someone else may not recognize at all — and that’s the point. There is, however, one constant: it’s not the amenity itself, but how travel makes you feel.
Part of the pull of luxury is that feeling — the one you get from a private bedroom and lounge in a hotel suite, or a room that comfortably holds a family of five. It might be a peaceful train ride to your destination, or a first-class seat to Europe. For some, that feeling comes from smart, simple accommodations that deliver real value. For others, it’s nothing short of the best of the best. Different paths, same destination: joy.
Take a recent client of mine, visiting family out of state. I booked her into a 3-star hotel with a separate sitting area, a microwave, and a full fridge — essentially the same comforts she has at home. To her, that was luxury, and she was right. Not everyone has access to those small comforts we so often take for granted, and having a space that felt like home away from home meant everything to her. She was thrilled. I was thrilled for her.
Compare that to another client, who wanted a 5-star property and a first-class or private jet experience. She loves being catered to, and after years of hard work, she’s earned the right to splurge. Like my first client, she came away just as joyful, just as satisfied. The only real difference between the two was budget.
Luxury, then, is built by leaning into a traveler’s feelings and expectations — price is simply a guardrail, a guidepost along the way. The real value I bring is creating that feeling for my clients, whatever their budget looks like.
That brings me to another piece I’d like to add to the definition – in this day and age, having someone plan your travel for you is a luxury in itself.
Researching destinations, comparing flights, vetting hotels — it adds up fast, and it can overwhelm even the most seasoned traveler. Having the means to hand that off to someone else is its own form of luxury. A travel advisor doesn’t just remove the stress of planning; we unlock experiences you likely couldn’t access on your own and offer a new lens through which to see the world. What used to be a headache can now be solved with a single consultation call. Think of your travel luxury advisor as a personal concierge, a partner in travel. With one phone call — and the stroke of a key — you’re on your way to unlocking your next adventure.
That, to me, is the whole idea behind Luxury, Unlocked. — not a single definition of luxury, but the key to finding yours.
